Chapter 14

Before doing any further investigation into what was going on, she decided that it was time to see Pierre. As she drove away from the Peterson home, Sienna wondered what in the world was actually going on. There had to be something more. If Orsino was right, and they were supposed to qualify, someone had told them the wrong number to use for the income amount. Or had, in turn, guessed a ballpark number and decided based on that that the Petersons didn’t deserve to have benefits. She didn’t know what had happened, but she was going to find out. And she was going to find out from someone who had actually gone through the application process with an eagle eye.

As much as she appreciated the information that Orsino was giving her, she had noticed that he didn’t exactly know what he was talking about. It sounded as if Lisa had done all of the paperwork unless she needed numbers from Orsino as far as his income, job, and all of that. If that was the case, then Orsino certainly wouldn’t know which numbers he needed unless something stood out because Lisa had been making a fuss about it.

Upon arriving at Pierre’s bakery, she shook those thoughts away. There was no reason for her to worry about it right now. Instead of worrying about the case, she decided to think about what kind of macarons she was going to buy. It had been a while since she had bought one. And they were, perhaps, the best thinking snack.

After entering the bakery, she found that Priscilla was working the cash register. However, it didn’t take long for her to see another familiar face: Seraphina. She was carrying a tray of fresh macarons in from the back of the bakery. At least she had been able to find something to do. And something that would allow her to have a source of income now that their father was incarcerated.

“I didn’t know you had gotten hired on here, Seraphina,” Sienna said as she walked over to the counter. “I’m glad to see that you’re doing well.”

“Priscilla thought that it would be a good idea to get me out of the house after everything that happened with my ex,” Seraphina said. “She’s the one who talked Mr. Delacroix into hiring me. I think she had the right idea. Being in the bakery each day and knowing that I’m not alone helps.”

“I’m glad to hear it. Speaking of Mr. Delacroix, is he in?” Sienna asked, setting her hands on the counter. “And, I’d like a dozen of those fresh macarons. They smell heavenly, and I’ve been craving macarons all day.”

“I can box up a dozen for you, Sienna,” Priscilla said. “Seraphina, why don’t you go see where the boss is?”

“Of course.”

With that, Priscilla pulled a dozen macarons off the tray for her. Seraphina walked back into the back of the bakery. Sienna waited patiently for Priscilla to finish boxing up her order before paying.
